Group 167.png

 Site Information

  • Haebangchon, meaning "Liberation Village," was named after people who settled on the hillside below Namsan Mountain following Korea’s liberation in 1945. These settlers included displaced individuals, returnees from abroad, and refugees of war. Located across Yongsan-dong 1-ga and 2-ga in Yongsan-gu near Namsan, Haebangchon is one of Seoul's representative hillside neighborhoods (known as daldongnae). Although it was designated for redevelopment in 1979 under the Yongsan Redevelopment District project, the village has retained its narrow alleys and sloped terrain.

  • In 2021, urban regeneration efforts by Yongsan District improved the area's accessibility for tourists, allowing visitors to explore themed walking routes. A slope elevator was installed on the neighborhood’s landmark "108 Steps."

  • Haebangchon has gained popularity as a filming location for various TV dramas and commercials, including My Name is Kim Sam-soon, Itaewon Class, When the Camellia Blooms, and a Sony camera advertisement, drawing continuous interest from locals and tourists alike.
